MAVETY, GEORGE W.
MAVETY-George W., 63. Died suddenly on August 19, 2000 at his home in Andover, New Jersey. Born in Newboro, Ontario, Canada, he spent many years as a teacher in Canada and the U.S. before eventually becoming involved in magazine publishing and at the time of his death, he was the owner of more than 50 companies, primarily in the publishing field. In the past few years, he had shifted his interests to real estate and owned many commercial and residential properties in the metropolitan New Jersey area. He was a generous benefactor to many humanitarian and philanthropic causes and organizations. Among memberships he held were: American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, Caron Foundation Board of Directors, English-Speaking Union, Friars Club of New York, Hellenic Plato Lodge o. 1129, National Coalition Against the Death Penalty Board of Directors, Periodical and Book Association of America and Yacht Club de Monaco. He is survived by a brother, Philip P. Mavety of Newton, New Jersey, and a sister, Jacqueline Cartwright of Oakville, Ontario, Canada. He was previously married to the late Susan Hawkins and the late Margeurite Laird. He is survived by his wife, Gertrud Hartmann Mavety and their son, Bruce, as well as his children from his previous marriages: Geraldine Mavety, Robert Mavety, Charles Mavety, George Mavety, Jr.; Keith Mavety, Sandford Mavety, their half-brother, David Laird; his companion, Annette McDonald, and their son, Chad Mavety, and his half-brother, Earl Chang; an uncle, Gerald Bell, and an aunt, Mary Wilson, both of Kingston, Ontario, Canada; numerous grandchildren and a host of other relatives & friends. A memorial service will be conducted by Amandus J. Derr, Senior Pastor, at St. Peters Lutheran Church, 619 Lexington Ave at 54th Street, New York City, on Thursday, August 24, at 3 PM.
